Hard Work and Orthotics Help Norris Beat Foot Injury

Josette Norris of Tenafly is recovering nicely from her injury and hopes to return to the track later this indoor seasonTenafly track star Josette Norris suffered a painful ruptured plantar fascia in November, but now she has almost completed the rehabilitation phase of her injury. She was running in the XC Meet of Champions when the damage to her foot came about.

“The foot is healing very well though, and I'm continuing my water training and actually tried the Alter-G treadmill this week, which is pretty awesome,” Norris said. “I also got orthotics for my foot, so I'm going to get used to that these next few weeks and walk around in my sneakers. I walked a mile on the track today.'' Norris hopes to be able to race again before the end of the season, although she’s unsure when exactly she’ll be ready.

Orthotics can be instrumental in soothing foot pain and preventing injuries. If you are interested in orthotics, a podiatrist like Dr. Andrew H. Cohen of Mid-Michigan Foot and Ankle Center may be able to help. With Dr. Cohen’s guidance you can choose an insert that will help your feet stay as healthy as they can be.

Ankle Foot Orthotics and What They Do

Usually used for the foot or ankle, orthotics provides support for weakened limbs or helps direct the limbs so they may function properly. These orthotics can help strengthen muscles as well as benefitting muscles that need to be loosened or lengthened. Usually the orthotics is designed in a rigid L shape that is contoured to the calf and flesh colored in order to blend with the patient’s appearance.

When are Orthotics Necessary?

Orthotics are prescribed when someone is diagnosed with diseases that affect the musculature such as polio and multiple sclerosis. However, ailments such as arthritis and stroke, or foot conditions that “toe in”, may also require orthotics.

As opposed to the metal braces of previous years, modern orthotics has improved tremendously. Many of today’s orthotics are manufactured with lightweight plastics and other advanced materials to provide new levels of support and comfort.
