Preventing Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis often plagues those who are constantly on their feet. Employees such as nurses, doctors, teachers and factory workers suffer from the pain of plantar fasciitis on a daily basis. Those who use their feet constantly or overuse their feet are highly susceptible to plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the plantar fascia that runs along the bottom of the foot. Some individuals seek relief using natural remedies or over the counter inserts. Others rely on their workplace to implement best practices to better care for their feet. With a combined effort, a person in the workforce as well as their employer can help prevent plantar fasciitis and other workplace injuries.

As an employer no one is more important than the employees that help run the core of your business. Employers can use three basic methods to help prevent their employees from suffering from plantar fasciitis and the pain that accompanies it. Inserts for the shoes, anti-fatigue/stress mats and pamphlets on proper stretching practices are all great methods for employers to use to help their employees prevent plantar fasciitis.

  1. Shoe inserts are great for workers who are constantly on the go. They cushion the arch, absorb shock, and provide stability to the foot. Inserts can be worn in almost any type of shoe without being seen. This provides for professionalism and practicality.
  2. Anti-fatigue mats are made to decrease stress on the feet by providing a cushioned surface for people who stand for long periods of time. These mats are ideal for places such as registers, greeting counters, reception areas, or any other area where the primary function involves standing for more than 5-10 minutes a time.
  3. Lastly, proper stretching can have a huge impact on the prevention of plantar fasciitis. Using specially crafted exercises during the morning, midday and evening, a person can keep their muscles warmed up and ready for increased stress. This prevents the overuse of the muscles and their strain. A podiatrist can advise on the types of proper stretches that are best for you.
