Chris Judd Keeps Speculation before Achilles Surgery

achillles tendonChris Judd, the two-time Brownlow medalist, is set to undergo Achilles tendon surgery—making him absent for the first two rounds of the season versus Port Adelaide and Richmond. This news has people speculating whether the AFL legend will continue past his current season.

While his team and Judd are confident that he will come through fine, they did reveal that this was not the first problem with his Achilles. This time, the surgery will cut nerve endings to eliminate the pain symptoms.

He had this to say, “…with five weeks to go before the season starts, we thought it was a good time to get on top of it. We've tried to put in some rehab measures and other measures which haven't worked. So this is the next progression from that."

An injury to your Achilles tendon can be debilitating. If you think you have hurt your Achilles, seek the assistance of podiatrist Dr. Andrew H. Cohen of the Diabetic Foot Center of Mid Michigan. Dr. Cohen will examine the afflicted area and recommend appropriate treatment options.

Just What Is the Achilles Tendon?

The Achilles tendon is the strongest tendon in our bodies. As the tendon that connects the heel to the calf muscles, the Achilles tendon helps with even the most basic movement in the legs such as walking. As a result, the Achilles tendon can risk incurring Achilles tendinitis or even a rupture. Those especially at risk include people who overexert themselves during physical activity, namely athletes.
Achilles Tendinitis Symptoms Include:

  • Inflammation
  • Increased Blood Flow
  • Tendon Thickening
  • Slower Movement Time
  • Pain ranging from dull to severe

Achilles Tendon ruptures are caused by the tendon ‘snapping’ or ripping. There are often more painful and immediate as opposed to Achilles tendinitis. There are surgical and non-surgical methods in treating Achilles tendon ruptures, with recovery time possibly taking up to a year.

While no injury is completely avoidable, there are preventive measures that can lower your chances. This includes:

  • Incorporating strengthening exercises to your workout regimen such as squats and leg presses
  • Stretch your tendon before and after exercise
  • Wear comfortable, fitted footwear that is occasion-specific
