Corns could be Cured Effectively with Plasters

cornsCorn plasters, which dissolve dead skin from the feet using salicylic acid, have usually been regarded by doctors as only short-term treatments for corns. But a new study from scientists at the Sheffield Teaching Hospital has demonstrated that this method may actually result in longer-lasting relief.

Sheffield researchers looked at 200 patients who had corns for a twelve month period. They found that if the subjects used corn plasters, they lost 34 percent of their corns in three months, while if they did not, they only lost about 21 percent. This indicates that plasters, along with supervision from a podiatrist, could increase the time in between outbreaks in many corn patients.

Corns on the feet are an irritating and unsightly skin condition. To learn more about how to deal with corns, contact podiatrist Dr. Andrew H. Cohen of the Diabetic Foot Center of Mid Michigan. Dr. Cohen will help figure out what’s causing you to develop these calluses and offer suggestions about how to get rid of them.

Corns: What are they? And how do you get rid of them?

Corns can be described as areas of the skin that have thickened to the point of becoming painful or irritating. They are often layers and layers of the skin that have become dry and rough, and are normally smaller than calluses.

Ways to Prevent Corns

There are many ways to get rid of painful corns such as wearing:
- Well-fitting socks
- Comfortable shoes that are not tight around your foot
- Shoes that offer support

Treating Corns

Treating corns involves removing the dead skin that has built up in the specific area of the foot. Salicylic acid can help in getting rid of these corns because it dissolves keratin, which is the protein that makes up a good majority of corns. Podiatrists recommend that people with diabetes not use salicylic acid but should consult with their podiatrist regarding the treatment of corns.

Preventing the Return of Corns

Orthotic shoes can also be an option because they are fitted by a podiatrist and help to prevent the return of corns.
