Flip-Flops can Cause Abnormal Biomechanics and Foot Pain

heel-pain.jpgFlip-flops have become increasingly popular amongst teens and young adults recently, and according to Dr. H. Ashely Ledger, a member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. They are also a contributing factor of heel pain and biomechanical abnormalities.

“We’re seeing more heel pain than ever in patients 15 to 25 years old, a group that usually doesn’t have this problem,” Ledger said. “A major contributor is wearing flip-flop sandals with paper-thin soles every day to school.”  Instead, Ledger proposes those who wear flip-flops to opt for strong soles and arch support.

Though flip-flops are comfortable during the summer months, they often can be very damaging to the feet if worn too often. If you have a foot condition that might be related to flip-flop usage, see a podiatrist like Dr. Andrew H. Cohen, D.P.M., of the Mid-Michigan Foot and Ankle Center. Dr. Cohen will analyze your injury and recommend a suitable treatment option.

Flip-Flops and Feet

When the weather starts warming up, people enjoy wearing flip-flops.  Flip-flops are comfortable, stylish, and easy to slip on and off, perfect for any summer beach goer.  However, these shoes can cause harm to the feet.

How Can Flip-Flops Affect Me Long-Term?

  • Ankle problems
  • Hip problems
  • Lower back problems
  • Pain in the balls of the feet
  • Problems with foot arches
  • Changes in the way you walk

Are there injuries associated with flip-flops?

Yes.  Since flip-flops are relatively weak and do not provide the same amount of support as sneakers, people who wear flip-flops are more susceptible to injuries. On top of that, the open nature of the shoe makes your feet more prone to other problems, such as cuts and even infections.  Common injuries and ailments include:

  • Sprained ankles
  • Blisters
  • Infections
  • Cuts and Scrapes

I like wearing flip-flops, are there safe alternatives?

When buying flip-flops, try to find ones that have sturdy soles and are made of high quality materials. These flip-flops will cost more, but will also support your feet and last longer as a result; make sure you are purchasing your flip-flops from a respected brand too.
