Some people work in a warm and cozy office during the bitter months of the winter. Others who are not as lucky have to work outside, in a cooler, or in another cold environment in the winter and sometimes year-round. Electricians, plumbers, mailmen, researchers, landscapers and so many others all work outside in the bitter cold. These workers work hard in the rain, sleet and snow. Now that winter is practically here, it is important to select shoes that will properly protect feet in the cold conditions that it brings. All shoes are made differently and have different fabrics, specifications and technologies that better equip them or the cold. Here are some tips and tricks from our podiatry team to help you select the best pair of shoes to protect your feet from the frosty weather to come.
- Wear insulated muffs over the top of your choice of shoes or around the ankles. These will help prevent cold air from getting into the opening of the shoe at the ankle area. It will also prevent anything else from entering the shoe from the top.
- Wear thick socks inside your work shoes. Wool tends to be very warm and is ideal for footwear during the cold winter months or in any other situation where the weather is frigid.
- Be sure to use leg warmers. This will help to insulate the legs and promote good circulation to the feet and body overall which will also help prevent frostbite.
- Select insulating overshoes to wear over your regular work shoes. These will help to keep the feet and toes warm all day. Your regular shoes will fit right inside them.
